More than $67,000 Awarded to Employee Dependents for Higher Education
Skokie, IL (August 12, 2008) -- Named after two of its original founding members, Tecta America Corp., the nation’s largest roofing company, has just announced the winners of its 3rd Annual John Miller Scholarships, and the Don McNamara Award. Available to the sons and daughters of more than 3,500 Tecta employees, a total of 29 scholarships were awarded this year, including 11 new awards plus scholarship renewals. The scholarships total more than $67,000, thus more than any other offered in the roofing industry, and are based on academic performance, financial need, and letters of recommendation.
The top scholarship, the Don McNamara Award, was awarded to Carlos Cantor, the son of Jose Cantor, a roofer with CEI Roofing Colorado, A Tecta America Company, located in Denver. Carlos graduated fifth in his class of 340 students, has been elected to the National Honor Society three times, and is involved in many volunteer activities including youth tutoring, Salvation Army programs and others through his Key Club involvement. Cantor will be attending University of Colorado-Boulder in its highly-competitive Civil Engineering program. Cantor is the first member of his family to go to college and is deeply appreciative of the struggle and sacrifices his parents have made for him and the values they have instilled. According to Cantor, his acceptance to CU is “truly a dream come true” for him.
“By awarding these scholarships Tecta hopes to express our commitment to our employees by helping them, and their families, achieve their dreams, and secure bright futures,” said Mark Santacrose, CEO and President of Tecta America.
John Miller currently serves as the director of Tecta America, and was the original chairman of Tecta America Corp. With a career in the roofing industry spanning 40 years, he is a past-president of the National Roofing Contractor’s Association (NRCA) and has served two terms as a member of the NRCA’s Board of Directors, along with a term as the NRCA’s Senior Vice President and Chairman of NRCA’s Alliance for Progress. Miller was a two-time President of the Association of Bay Area Roofing Contractors.
Don McNamara was a chairman of one of Tecta America’s original companies and led Tecta in its first year as its President and CEO. McNamara led both the NRCA and the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association (MRCA) as a former president.
